Last Musical Shits In Iowa City [Jun. 4th, 2008|11:23 am]
This weekend will be the final gigs and probably the last in a long while in Iowa before I go to Sacramento and NYC/wherever. Come check them out. Cuticle, Brendan O'Keefe and my techno duo will be playing the once hippie-jamfest Exodus (website is horrible, I know) this weekend. It's a great excuse to camp out if you really don't care about the bands. We look like this:

Driphouse will be playing the final Yellow Swans show on Sunday before they go to Spain and breakup. Wet Hair, Lwa feat. Evan Miller, and Open Goat are opening too.

Bye for now.

Premature Departure [Jun. 4th, 2008|10:53 am]
Starting on the 15th of this month, I shall be taking off from the state of Iowa City into California and living in its capitol, Sacramento. I'll be in her for two whole months while Derek and Wendy will be off in China with her parents and exploring its massive culture. Initially, I was thinking how isolated I would be from any subcultural interests that I have, but after looking into the workings of Sacramento, I think it'll be a much more social experience than I could ever hope for. There are several weirdo music events happening: Wolf Eyes is playing a $5 gig the day after I arrive in town, which is a nice treat; Sic Alps and Eat Skull will be playing in the Sac/Davis area before they hit the midwestern shores; and hopefully this Extreme Animals show I took the responsibility to book will happen and be well attended. A trip to LA will likely happen, I just need to figure out an employment situation and a way to get music gear as I will leave most of my stuff here.

Other news, I finally check out Noisebloid and "whoever" maintains this blog finally updated it this year. The gossip/lies/pure fantasy blog-tabloid is retardedly funny for approximately 1000 people, except for the possible "celebrity" news that happens. For example, this entry could be the most absolute banal news bit unless you take in the account of the extreme high dose of context required. Funny to People Magazine? No. Funny to anyone on the Troniks board? About half will find it funny, and the other half will find it completely terrible.

Last thing, I have several cassettes out now. The Driphouse "2" C12 is finished and dubbed. The Dubdrip/Nimby summer cassingle is still out and I have a handful of copies. Anyone curious knows how to get a hold of me, I hope. There's also a Trash Dog/Zero Aggression cassingle floating about too, but I don't have any copies of that yet. They are killer. William Elliot Whitmore of "Will Whitmore" fame instantly became a fan at their gig with Escape the Floodwater Jug Band record release show and immediately purchased their debut cassette.

PEACE

T2 OCB [Apr. 28th, 2008|12:59 am]
Today my parents visited Iowa City and my cousin treated everyone to Old Country Buffet. Skeptical of the food, I went anyways and pigged out on whatever non-meat dish that looked decent. The best moment at the family-food establishment happened in the middle of conversation I had with my father about restaurants and class. A large biker dude getting food had an approximation of this image on his upper left arm:

Nicely faded too so every dark blues looked light and pastel with the red eyes looking like pink skin.

My eBay account should roll with more items around 9pm tomorrow night:

eBaying [Feb. 18th, 2008|05:19 pm]
I probably should've posted this earlier, but it doesn't matter at this point. What does matter is that I am selling a lot of my personal possesions on eBay and I thought you'd like to know:

MENTAL PAIN [Dec. 17th, 2007|02:27 pm]
You know what hurts? NOT school assignments that have redeeming value in the way it exercises the brain. But when it's done to the point where it's beyond repetition, loses all educational value, and is self-implicated as "busy work", that's when it becomes MENTAL PAIN. I am experiencing mental pain right now. And when that is doubled-up with the prospects of graduation this Saturday, procrastination is at the most extreme. Two weeks ago I experienced my first taste of mental pain for the semester, when I barely wrote a paper that was two days late. Fortunately, the professor gave me a nice B, despite all its shortcomings.

So, how am I putting off this assignment? Many things:

1. Tokyo Drifter was recently viewed a couple hours ago. I am a big Seijun Suzuki fan. This is a strong one that contends well with his updated "sequel", Pistol Opera. Beautiful scenes with a eye for color and great fight scenes, this one is probably a DVD I'd like to own if I had room.

2. Yamaha's RM1X came to me last week in a nice packed box. Three LEDs on it are not working, but they serve barely any use for me. The beats provided are 100% better than Roland's MC-303, and is more intuitive in programming. I just laid down some basic foundation of my robotic italo song in an hour this morning. The only gripe I have is that the arpeggiator feature is really weak. No worries though, I'll just use the 303's through MIDI. Do you know that MIDI rules? It is really confusing, but works like magic when it is properly programmed.

3. Hex came into town Thursday and left this morning. He's a friend of Raccoo-oo-oon's from South Carolina. He took a train from Oakland and stopped on his way back home to Charleston. Cool guy. Check out Ex-Pets or Pukeattack or Time Blazers.

4. My design BFA show is finally set up as of Monday. Last week it was just a pile of trash behind a display case. Now it's just a pile of trash with some order.

5. Haruki Murakami's book Pinball, 1973 was a nice quick read, and from what I've gathered, was one of his weaker books. I look forward to reading his novels. I am also in the middle of a Carlos Castaneda's A Separate Reality: Further Conversations with Don Juan. Not bad so far.

6. I am moving into a new house, a half block away from my basement abode. It provides me the need to play loud volumes in the privacy of a space in order for me to practice and write music. I'm also given two rooms for cheaper rent, provided I don't go through the living room that my new roommate is currently using as her bedroom. Hopefully I'll have more stories about my roommate. She is the stuff of legends.

I have a handful of other things going on, but that'll do for now.
PEACE!

S & P [Nov. 12th, 2007|12:01 pm]
My eight-day trip out of the country could have been a flawless success if it weren't for the weird plane situation of ripoffs Ryanair.com or the minor housing situation in Valencia. But besides that, everything was incredibly enjoyable. The Acid Mothers dudes were sweet and Kawabato gave us a piece of his mind on some of the Japanese bands the American undergroun audience fetishize. The festival in Castellon was a bit boring as it was mostly American indie-rock bands, but that was countered with hanging out with the Wolf Eyes crew when they finally rolled in and hanging out with some of the people of Dirty Projectors (especially their beautiful bassist, Angel). I saw some funny drama happening with Deerhunter. They proclaimed to play their second worst set on this European tour after their performance.

Some non-musical details:

-Saw three dead animals, one of them being a dog with a spiked collar on the side of the road, two of them birds.
-Visited the future bunker in Valencia featuring a playground made of ropes, and ate some good pizza.
-Learned about a Portuguese woman's fear of Chinese people taking over the world.
-Drank a lot of wine.
-Ate a lot of OK vegetarian food. I was very close to eating seafood, and actually ate a dish that contained shrimp, but not the shrimp itself.
-Saw a lot of beautiful brunettes, all probably thinking I was weird.
-Thought all the dudes dressed terribly.
-Had a photo taken with a couple. WEIRD!
-Nelson, the long haired dude with white trousers and shoes, brown leather jacket, thick glasses, and an XL tie-dyed BLUES TRAVELLERS shirt. "I don't know this band, I just told my girl friend what kind I shirt I wanted and she found this on eBay."
-Did a radio ID for a radio station in Mexico? !!!!!?

Some photos to be uploaded soon!

DAMO [Oct. 16th, 2007|12:36 am]
One hour and forty minutes of guitar with just a minute break in between songs. Fingers raw and tired. Stumbling psych jam. Drunk crowd goes completely nuts.

Earlier.

I'm at the KRUI studio and Damo Suzuki is sitting in front of me, greyed-out long hair and looking alittle tired. My questions for him received curt answers and being the amateur, were not followed up. The interview lasted seven minutes. I didn't think questions about Can should be asked, since I am sure they've been pounded to the ground.

It ended up being a good Thursday. The dude is so quiet and humbling that I can't imagine how he lives his life doing this.

Few days later I am still receiving compliments from people that NEVER talk to me (cute older women). I love how much music affects da peeps.

Me: *chuckling* Oh really?
Kyle: So is it true?

Three in a row [Oct. 4th, 2007|10:24 am]
If any of you in Iowa City have nothing to do for the next three days, you can see a whole lot of me at the Picador starting tonight. I will be playing improvisational guitar tonight for the ICE Film festival, doing three minute ditties for three minute "home movie"-style films. It's free too! Tomorrow, Trash Dog, the new Iowa City hXc band featuring myself, Ryan Garbes, and Jeff Witscher, will be busting out some scrum riffs, torn vocals, and bad drumming for the Magik Markers show. And SATURDAY will be the Girl Talk/Dan Deacon/White Williams show with Wet Hair, a new one-time only fare with everyone in Raccoo-oo-oon except for Andy. He's in L.A. If you're going to the Jandek show instead, you'll probably not miss too much on our end and probably will be at a more interesting show anyways. Plus, my friend Skye is playing viola with the dude!
