FOOD(Section 1 of 2)
In one of our interviews the band conducted before we took a plane over to Europe, I mentioned one of the things I looked forward to is the food to be had. Well, that didn't change when we arrived. Here is my day-to-day account of the cuisines mostly brought over by immigrants, who not only seek a new life in a foreign continent, but also bring along their most treasured customs of dining.
Before we arrived to the UK, we did have the worse airplane food in the world. Vegetarian meatloaf was the main course and it was terrible. Later for breakfast received a stiff bagel, while the other guys were mistakenly given a stiff crossaint (not vegan). Things looked up 100000% when we arrived in London. Our friend, Chris Tipton took us to a smal Turkish buffet. Although my memory is quite blurry from jet-lag, it was the most excellent buffet to be eaten at £5. Very reminiscent of Indian food, Turkish food had the beans, rice, chick-peas, naan-like usuals, though something was just so delicious that make it distinct from Indian food.
The next day we took a ferry to France and had to vulture our way through hunger by hanging out at the cafeteria in the ferry, grabbing "chips" leftover and even grabbing a funny-looking chicken dish for our omnivore friend who came from San Francisco to roadie. It's expensive and terrible. Good thing we didn't pay a dime. When we arrived in Rotterdam, we were treated with Surinamese food! Our hosts inform us of Dutch's history with their oppressive colonies in Suriname, thus their access to such food. It was delicious! I have photos somewhere that I will upload later. The food was similar to my meager experience with Ethiopian food, with a difference in how it is served. Thin, pancake-like bread with all the bean and potatoes and some greens. The best!
K-RAA-K provided us with some tolerable microwaved liquid-lasagne. I chugged a couple. The bread provided was of extrodinary quality, but the rumor was the catering had problems and they last-minute switched to a fast solution.
Amsterdam had nice €2 falafels and some Indian food with a Bollywood theme. Our server was the happiest dude with a killer turban and mustache. Unlimited basmati rice was a PLUS!
Den Haag hosted us to some AMAZING homecooking. They served us a mix of Mediterranean and whatever cooking that I still miss. That was probably the first day I started to gluttonize myself with their salad and coucous.
Then there's France. Our dinner at the venue was a good, rice-noodle dish that was obviously not French. But the bread was amazing, along with the wine and cheeses they served! Five different cheeses of the snobbiest picks. My favorite was the stinkiest cheese that was close to smelling like a garbage filled with compost and other waste material. It was excellent. Second place was a nice mild cheese I can't really describe either. Later we figured out the wine served was actually box-wine, which still kills any American spirits I've had.
Our way back to the UK was another ferry ride, with more bad "chips" leftover, covered in mayonaisse and vinegar. Bleh.
The rest of the UK will have to be reserved for a later date. I'm getting very nostalgic for all these meals right now so I have to stop myself before I get really hungry.
